Acanthus spinossus

Station 6 - Heather Bank and Croquet Lawn Border

A plant that we greatly enjoy, but rarely plant any more. The reason for this is, if you ever want to remove a mature plant, it can be nearly impossible to eradicate.

Semi-evergreen in our climate (a harsh winter will cut it to the ground), this architecturally beautiful species is striking when in flower. Site where it gets full day sun and good winter drainage.

Don't plant small, delicate neighbors too close – as this plant will bulk up with age and can readily get five to six feet wide when in full leaf. Flower spikes can reach five to six feet in height, if well fed.
