Alstroemeria psittacina

Season:

Spring

Location:

Station 1 - Patio & lower lawn of E.B. Dunn residence

This plant we inherited when we moved here, and it is a good thing that we like it, as trying to eradicate certain forms of Alstroemeria can prove challenging… However, this plant has never been terribly aggressive in our garden, unlike in other parts of the world.

The ‘Parrot Lily’ flower reminds me of Christmas, being red along with a bit of green and white.  They make excellent cut flowers. Just remember to pull the flowering stem out, versus cutting, as pulling out the flowering stem will trigger growth hormones, encouraging the plant to send up more flowering shoots.
